When Hockensmith and readers reach Appleby Faira boisterous gathering that first took place more than 300 years agothey have shared a penetrating insight into a way of life that has been much misunderstood but is cherished by the Gypsies with the same fierce pride they maintain for their colorful horses.

Here to Stay - The Gypsies and Travellers of Britain
There is growing public interest in who `the Gypsies' are, where they come from and how they have survived centuries of discrimination. This book aims to challenge some of the assumptions that are made about Gypsies and Travellers. It looks at Gypsy and Traveller identity and the centrality of family life within their vibrant and robust cultures. Aspects of Gypsy and Traveller land-use and accommodation are considered - whether roadside encampments, council sites, privately owned sites or `bricks and mortar' housing. Core chapters deal with the plethora of legal issues that impact on the daily lives of Gypsies and Travellers as well as health, education and social-service issues. How the media have tended to portray Gypsies and Travellers is a key topic contributed by Dr Rachel Morris, while Dr Robert Home has written on planning. Finally, the authors consider how European social policy and Roma/Gypsy/Traveller agendas are being played out in Britain.
The Gypsies and Travellers of Britain are an important, energetic and underrepresented group that can play a crucial role in working towards a genuinely multicultural society Gypsy and Traveller nomadism needs to be seen within the context of current debates on multiculturalism and racism. This book makes an important contribution to those debates.
Dr Colin Clark is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology in the Department of Geography and Sociology at the University of Strathclyde and has conducted fieldwork with New Travellers, Scottish Gypsy/Travellers and English Gypsies and written widely on their place in society.
Dr Margaret Greenfields is a Senior Lecturer in Social Policy at Buckingham Chilterns University College where she is involved in a range of research initiatives relating to Gypsy Travellers and social exclusion, and access to culturally appropriate health care for minority ethnic and marginalised communities.

The Way of the Romany
This is a must for every collector of Gypsy Books!
A word from the author:
"I was fortunate to be able to gather a collection of my very own photographs along with others belonging to relatives and various other Gypsies who have trodden and rolled the same road as myself. The photographs have been reproduced to their best from originals supplied, many of which are very old and have suffered from being frequently handled and in some cases not well stored. I am indebted to all people who have assisted in making this book possible and I hope that all Gypsies, past, present and, I hope, future will look back and enjoy the visual record of the photographs produced. I also thank all the people who have copyright on pictures or text for permission to reproduce them. I am particularly grateful to Derbyshire Gypsy Liaison Group and Siobhan Spencer and Bob Dawson for allowing me to use some of the material they have written.

Stopping Places
Stopping Places describes the traditional life of these Gypsies, living in bender tents and horse-drawn wooden vardos, until the mechanisation of farming began to reduce the need for casual labour. At the same time, life on the road was becoming increasingly difficult because traditional stopping places were disappearing.
Simon Evans produces radio for the BBC and is also a writer, photographer and video-make. He has a longstanding relationship with the Romany community in Kent and is involved with a number of innovative educational projects which aim to integrate Romany culture into the school curriculum.
